‘Sng Bao’

Saw these at Seng Siong Supermarket when I was doing my grocery shopping recently… No, its NOT an “edible private body massager”…. those of my time would remember them as ‘Sng Bao’, or ‘Ice packs’ by literal translation – probably considered as the commercialized version improvised from ‘Ice balls’ of my parent’s era.

It was one of the most affordable (10cents each) and convenient choice for any kid to get a quick kick of sugar rush back in my childhood days. It’s actually flavoured syrup juice that comes in a stick-like plastic package the resembles somewhat like a two section sausage. To consume, one can either twist-off the teets at one end and suck out the juice from there…. or freeze it hard and break it in the middle to get two short ice sticks that one can share with a good buddy. Lots of flavours packed in flashy colours to choose from.

Design something to bring back this spirit of sharing!

  • That brings alot of memories. To add to the cooling story, I remember buying the homemade version from some aunties selling from their home. They would tie the sng pow with rubber band.. and the thing would drip along the corridor and void decks while we played catching or football… simple pleasures of life!

  • This is also my growing up favorite. However I agree with a total redesign. I’m sure there are better brands out there, but this one looks synthetic.
Even the guy on the packet looks like he is in a Lab Coat holding on to a test tube of chemical. Ok, the picture is also suggestive in other ways, but I won’t go there.
Those neon colors also make them look more like light sticks we use in the SAF:)
    Guys, go help them out!

  • We need to help them and make the message clear, which is; How to stick this in your kids mouth and keep them quite for an hour! We could be very rich :-) after that, follow on designs will be two hours and three hours or till you get across the traffic jams at the causeway.

  • I got an idea… do it the Americano way… Up-size! Imagine a super duper icecle… and sell it with a custom drip pan! drawing coming up soon!

  • “There’s a diversity of quality original works on display and I hope they can be part of a long term exhibition that can be expanded in the near future. Some actually displayed that rare but well executed Asian identity which I find refreshing.

Overall I think this reflects well on the image & quality of Singapore design.

For a developed nation, we’re a nation with a surprising lack of identity and self esteem when it comes to aesthetics and art; from decision makers down to the masses, and I hope this exhibition together with a host of others in the Design Festival will spell the start of an awareness of good quality local design and celebrate a new chapter of confidence in the industry.”
